What is
Simulation?
Computer simulation models are abstractions that, while simpler than real systems, attempt to predict certain aspects of the real world. They reduce complex systems to a manageable number of components and processes whose linkages and interactions can be carefully examined. Simulation models are used in diverse areas such as chemistry, physics, meteorology, the earth sciences, astrophysics, and the social sciences to understand how complex systems function. Complexity often emerges from simple rules or first principles.

Simulation modeling and systems analysis take a holistic approach to problem solving, using mathematical models to simulate important processes in complex systems. Simulation has these advantages:
Facilitates understanding. A well-designed computer simulation can help users predict the course and results of certain actions, understand why observed events occur, explore the effects of modifying model parameters, evaluate hypotheses, and gain insights into causality.
Inexpensive. The cost of developing and running a simulation model can be a fraction of running field trials, especially when exhaustive exploration of the 'solution space' is desired.
Can be used in systems where experimentation is dangerous. The classic example is the use of flight simulators for training pilots.
